Well-known maverick of the Sinhala cinema and theatre, Dharmasiri Bandaranayake shares his views on his politically charged play “Ekadhipathi” and the future of serious art in Sri Lanka

Dharmasiri Bandaranayake is not a man to mince his words. And his outspokenness is not confined to the fiery, controversial dialogues he delivers on stage. Seated at a table at the Cultural Foundation he set up five years ago in a quiet neighbourhood in Nugegoda, it takes little prompting to draw him into a conversation about his work as a dramatist and filmmaker and the wider role he feels his tribe has to play in Sri Lankan society if it’s to come out of the ‘cultureless’ pit it has got itself into.

“My medium is cinema /drama and I have a responsibility as an artist to express my views on what I feel is happening in our society and awaken the public to the dangers they face,” Bandaranayake says.

And what he has to say he says with passion and intensity be it in a stage play such as “Ekadipathi ”(The Dictator) that touches at the very political nerve of the country or via cinema through films such as “Hansa Vilak” (Swan Lake), which explores relationships that exceed the boundaries set by social traditions or norms.

To an outsider it would almost seem that he courts controversy by taking on subjects that others in his field would shun but again Dharmasiri Bandaranayake is not known to be a man who plays it safe by being politically correct. “It is true I intentionally choose to do plays with political themes and portray unconventional characters via cinema but the purpose is not to create a controversy but awaken the intellect of the public,” he says.

Bandaranayake first began to dabble in acting while a schoolboy at Vidyaratnaya, Horana taking roles in school plays but his entry into the world of cinema came when he was picked for a role in Dayananda Gunawardana’s ‘Bak Maha Deegaya’ in 1969.

Bandaranayake grew up in a volatile society and found himself in the middle of the first youth uprising in the country in 1971 soon after he completed his Advanced Level examination.

“The hopes of an entire generation of youth were dashed with the crushing of the youth uprising. Had I joined the JVP then, I may have been one of their senior members today, but instead, I joined the government clerical service and started working as a clerk at the Rubber Control Department,” he recollects.

It was while he was engaged in mundane clerical work that Henry Jayasena selected him for the lead role in the stage play Makara (The Dragon). “It was a great privilege to be selected by a person like Henry Jayasena and also to get the opportunity to act with prominent theatre personalities of that era. These experiences helped shape my career in theatre,” Bandaranayake adds.

But 1976 was the year that Bandaranayaka came in to his own, directing and acting in the politically explosive play “Ekadhipthi”. “The play ran to packed audiences for two full days in November 1976 at the Lumbini Hall in Colombo. Its staging coincided with the imminent collapse of the United Front government of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike and struck a chord with the audiences,” he recalls.

Bandaranayake has played the lead role of military dictator Sir Malcolm since the inception of the play now running in its 36th year, a remarkable feat for any actor. The play began its latest rerun in June last year and this time coincided with the emergence of a military strongman into the political arena of the country in the form of General (retd.) Sarath Fonseka, which caused some hiccups for the play.

“When I decided to have a re-run of “Ekadipathi,” the developments with regards to the early presidential election were nowhere on the horizon. But the staging of the play led to inevitable comparisons between my role and some in the real political arena and made people question if I had made changes to it to fit into today’s context. But I haven’t changed a comma or a full stop from the original play till today,” he says.

With more than 1400 shows to its credit and at least 20 more scheduled to be staged across the country over the next few months, the remarkable feature of “Ekadipathi” is its relevance to contemporary Sri Lanka as much as it was to the society that existed more than three decades ago. Does he share anything in common with the ruthless dictator who goes to the extent of ordering that the thumbs of the entire citizenry be decapitated to prevent them from writing as a collective punishment when some literature critical of his regime is uncovered.

“I loathe the character I play in ‘Ekadipathi’ but I have to become that person and play it for the pleasure of the audience,” he explains. With the growing nexus between politicians and artists and the line differentiating the two beginning to blur, Bandaranayake prefers to stay out of the pack but that is after the experiences he gathered after dabbling briefly in politics in support of (President) Chandrika Kumaratunga. “Getting involved in politics was the biggest mistake I have made in my life,” Bandaranayake says.

He sees the lack of appreciation for culture and arts as a result of the conditioning of society in the past three decades to a war mentality but says the end of the war has led to an even more militarised attitude among the people. “I feel that in the past three years, people’s way of thinking has become more militant than has happened in the 27 or 28 years before that,” he adds.

It is these same attitudes that have seeped into the sphere of arts as well. “When I produced ‘Ekadipathi’ in the 70s, there was more camaraderie and team work which is lacking among today’s crowds. They too have been corrupted by society around them,” he says.

“We have to break free from that conditioning and as artists our role is to open the eyes of society to these threats,” he adds. Lack of appreciation of the arts by politicians too is another notable change he sees between then and now.

“In the 1970s politicians also had a cultural life. I remember Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike coming and watching our plays along with her children. Prominent politicians such as N.M. Perera, Colvin R.De Silva, Peter Keuneman, Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali were some of the others who bought tickets to watch the plays but now we have to invite them to come and even when they do, they bring a horde of security guards which disturbs the others.”

He laments the absence of official patronage for the arts in the country. “I visited Lester James Peries recently and he spoke of the necessity to have a film archives.

“This is what he has been saying for several decades now but nothing has been done,” he said. So is it all gloom and doom or is there a light at the end of the tunnel for a more enlightened society to emerge? “We only need one good man to make this country. But that good man has to be the President,” he says in his characteristic candid manner.

I still can recollect that Ambalangoda Town hall was jam packed on that day. We as the regional dramatists then were influenced by "Eka adhipathi" . I just can remember one incident which happened in 1978. We had produced a stage drama called "Prabuu" for the drama competition conducted by the Youth council. I had played the main role of the play. The director of the play who was the script writer too wanted me to perform like "Dharmasiri Bandaranayake" . I have done my part up to his expectation. The judges were the great Henry Jayasena and Dr. Solomon Fonseka. Our play was thoroughly criticized by the judges as it was a carbon copy of "Eka Adhipathi" . But I was commended and encouraged by the judges and also warned me not to imitate anyone on the stage. I still remember that great Henry Jayasena had said that " we do not want duplicate Dharmasiri Bandaranayake". After that i have followed an acting course conducted by Dr. Solomon Fonseka.

"Eka Adhipathi" undoubtedly is a milestone in the theater of Sri Lanka. I strongly believe that the young dramatists should watch this play again and again as this is a classic example for them to study an overall stage production.

Let me wish you all the success in future.

thanks N regards

among which 'Eka Adhipathi' (The Dictator)
of Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka stands out as an
exceptional experience by two generations of
theatregoers spanning from 1970s to the present day.
From its inaugural staging till 1993,

the play continuously mesmerized the Sinhala audience
with 1400 shows being successfully

"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"
is the motto Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka
tries to convey through this political satire.
The very fact that this piece of art
has managed to keep the immense attraction
of the Sinhala audience for such a long time implies
the inability of the Sri Lankan society
to come to grips with the brutal nature
of power even after three decades of democratic exercise,
thereby keeping the validity of the satirical issue intact.
The dichotomy between the ruler and the ruled
in its most crude form has not changed,
and it still perpetuates itself to puzzle the society at large,
hence the relevance of Eka Adhipathi (The Dictator) even today.

Dharmasiri Bandaranayaka is an artist who strives
to engage his audience with burning issues
of socio-political importance in order to make that audience
not only into an entertaining collective
but also into an active mass of conscious agents of social change.

In short, art for him is a joy only to the extent

of its being a catalyst for responsible social intervention.

His later productions,

attest to this conviction.
It is a universal journey in which the poet/playwright sees into the future. In Sri Lanka, a 25-year-pld rebel par excellence ventured on a similar mission in 1976 with his debut play Eka Adhipathi which reverberates with its timeless, universal criticism of corrupt politics, proving the playwright’s prowess. This is an interview with the rebel on the theatre Dharmasiri Bandaranayake who brings his highly acclaimed Eka Adhipahti back to theatre after 33 years.
What were the forces that motivated you as an amateur in 1976?

A: I entered theatre as an actor. Theatre has been the most dazzling medium in my life since my schooling time. I obtained much knowledge from the teachers I associated with. From the outset, I realised that I was being moulded by the training of drama in my creative sphere as well as personal life. While I gained immense pleasure and satisfaction out of theatre activities, I did not want to be a mere actor. Making an attempt to give life to good characters became a duty as well as responsibility for me. In this regard, I must mention three playwrights who had an enormous influence on me - Dayananada Goonewardena, Henry Jayasena and Sugathapala de Silva. Among the work I received to exhibit my talent, I must gratefully remember Makara by Henry Jayasena in which I was trained for the character called ‘Lanslot.’ My limbs, my voice, my gestures were all trained well for this character which was totally different from the character I play in Eka Adhipathi.

When I got involved in that play, the 1971 rebellion had just been over. It was the 1971 rebellion that devastated our education and the whole future. By the time I finished schooling, my dreams of university entrance had been shattered against a backdrop in which universities had become jails and rehabilitation centres. In 1971, I got a job as a government clerk, and this period was a turning point in my life. While all my future expectations had collapsed, the only recuperative power existed in theatre. As I feel, the ’71 rebellion and its context, the Sirimavo Bandaranaike regime and its collapse, the betrayal of the leftist movement etc. which gave birth to a political upheaval in the wider context had created a psychological tension within me. It was this tension that propelled me into my first stage creation, Eka Adhipathi at the age of 25. Initially I scripted this as Ghaathanaya (‘Murder’). The play was premiered at the Lumbini Theatre on November 25 and 26, 1976. The audience response was enthralling. Interestingly, the critics were polarised into two extremes as some argued the play as an excellent piece while some were of the view that it was a bad piece of work. Both types of criticism were important for me as an emerging playwright in terms of guidance which contributed to my successive work.

Q: The term ‘Eka Adhipathi’ is not confined to the protagonist per se, but it transcends to some other characters such as Malcolm the junior (the protagonist’s son). How do you perceive the contemporary political milieu of 1970s that paved the way for this play, and what is your reaction to the contemporary left-wing and right-wing political movements?

A: After Ms. Sirimavo Bandaranaike came to power, she opted for an alliance with the pioneers of the leftist political movement, and this existed since 1963. By 1970, the latter had much trust in the Bandaranaike administration, and accepted ministerial positions in her government. We, government servants, were fed with stuff like manioc with the so-called purpose of developing the country. At the same time we were informed that those who imposed the regulations were not consuming the same stuff. As I see, the ruling class is the one that burdens the ruled with innumerable burdens while living comfortably. This is called democracy. During the rebellion those from our generation who got involved were eliminated. This contemporary milieu had much impact on my play. The ‘super-speedy’ characters I have created in Eka Adhipathi were, in fact, drawn from my contemporary time.

Today, I do not look at this play as an antique work. Many spectators praise that I had created a prophetic work more than three decades ago of which the dialogues bear relevance even today. In the latest production, I haven’t changed even a minute detail of the original script.
The reason for me to re-stage it today is not because an election is forthcoming. We stared rehearsals around five months ago.

Q: This play is located in a Western context in regard to the fictional characters and also references to the real political figures to such an extent that the spectator may feel it is an adaptation of a foreign play. Why did you opt for this technique? Were you influenced by the Western theatre?

A: By 1971, institutions such as the British Council were staging many good theatrical pieces than earlier. Sometimes we did not understand their language because we were part of a generation that kept the English language aloof. However, their alluring quality, mode of casting and stage direction etc. inspired and impacted us a lot. This does not mean that we tried to imitate the Western theatre. As I think, drama is not a discipline of our own, but it came from ‘that side.’ Once it came to us, it could be moulded in accordance with the requirements of the Asian context. In the casting in Eka Adhipathi, I made an attempt to transcend beyond the locally prevalent mode of casting. Conversely, we were also highly influenced by the local playwrights such as Sugathapala de Silva, Dhamma Jagoda and Upali Attanayake.

With regard to the use of foreign names etc, if I had used local proper names for the characters, the play might have become a dreary, boring thing that could not be called a play.
Concurrently, I was greatly influenced by the role of Hitler, A ‘weakling-turned-dictator’ who devastated a human civilisation with despotism and genocide. Such ‘weaklings’ emerge as a result of our weaknesses. At this juncture, we should be determined to overcome our weaknesses in order not to give into a weakling. Eka Adhipathi features bloodshed, rape, murder and anarchical rule which I captured as a person who did not participate in the rebellion.

Q: The universality and the timelessness of the play are indisputable. It is a praiseworthy endeavour on your part to bring this back to the stage for the entertainment of a generation that followed yours. But, why did you decide to bring your first stage creation three decades instead of opting for a new production?

A: After making Trojan Känthäwo (adapted from Trojan Women by Euripides) in 1999, I did not make any stage creations. I was motivated to re-stage my earlier work by the young students studying theatre and drama who come to this institution (Trikone Cultural Foundation) to collect material on my plays. They select my drama for their theses and dissertations. They come here, ask for information, get the scripts and reviews photocopied, and go. A question I recurrently asked them was whether they had seen any of the plays. They hadn’t seen.

Then I would ask them as to why they would continue this dishonest work. As I say, if they are going to write on a play by merely looking at its script, they had better write on Shakespeare. Then at least they would have compiled a good research work. These students give us a signal. They say ‘we haven’t seen any of your plays because we were born after you finished staging them.’ As playwrights who speak of the world, we should be concerned about these issues too. Therefore, I decided to present all my plays from May this year till November next year, one in three months. Thus, following Eka Adhipathi, Yakshägamanaya (The Sinhala adaptation of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht) which I made in 1994 as a sequel to Eka Adhipathi will be staged at Lionel Wendt early April. This play explores how the nuances of dictatorship are socially institutionalised. Subsequently, Makara Räksha, Dhawala Bheeshana and Trojan Känthäwo will come. In the meantime, I’m working on a new play which will come out next year, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. It has been translated by Gamini Viyangoda, and I present it as Mäya Wësha.

Q: What are the challenges and the difficulties you encountered when you re-staged Eka Adhipathi?

A: They (destructive comments) have come from the political sphere and the mass media. All of them ask me as to why I stage this at this time. It may be because of its name ‘Eka Adhipathi’. It is not even ‘Ekadhipathi’ but ‘Eka Adhipathi’ meaning ‘that one is the superior.’ Here, ‘that one’ refers to the ‘weakling,’ someone who is shamelessly and limitlessly weak. I act this role, and it is an enthralling experience for me to give life to this character as a man of 60. Up to now, I have been analysing the nature of the weakling for three decades.

However, when we present this play, the Presidential election has been notified. When a poster of this play is pasted by the side of the poster of a Presidential candidate, the general public who see the poster would pause to question who that person is. We do not know whom he selects. We have to face this issue. We have faced numerous issues in our lifetime, but have never faced something like this. The Sirimavo Bandaranaike regime collapsed when we started staging this play, which was staged 1,400 times under the subsequent Jayewardene regime. That regime did not come up with any issues with this play. As I believe, there are some positive features in the capitalist system. It is this leftist movement that brings out wretchedness into the public.

Even the current President expressed his concern about this play by congratulating me over the telephone and visiting Lionel Wendt in person. We do not know how the other parties would react to this. What I asked from everyone including the President was not to make this play a form of political propaganda on the political stage. Leave us alone with our own engagement with innocent spectators.

Q: In 1976, you were a passionate and enthusiastic young dramatist yearning for experience. By 2009, you are a mature and experienced playwright and filmmaker. How would you compare these two periods in relation to staging the play?

A: I have to emphasise this point. It is with enormous difficulty that we save humanity. It is because of the sensitivity of our generation that I can make this statement. The spectator who sees this play today for the second time repeatedly tells me that ‘we could not understand this that day, but we understand it today.’ While I’m delighted by this fact now, I see the drawbacks of this play too. But, I’m not going to voice them because it is the duty of critics.

Anyway, why is this play so impressive? It is because it is a play. When you are seated on your seat, if you feel any discomfort, we would sense it from the stage. I met many viewers then, and meet even now who would say that it is their first ever experience of seeing a drama. Some famous figures in the current creative field say this is the first drama they had seen, and they had started liking drama after that.

But when the present young generation is considered, their involvement in the political stream is much. If we compare 1976 with the present work of the young artistes, you may see an answer. You can discern something. Acting has been underestimated. The main reason for this is that drama is a medium which does not have a professional basis. But a young generation has emerged who think that it is a profession based-medium, and they tend to get involved in it with the idea of earning money. This is not the only medium they work in. They go to other media like television. They have very busy schedules in which they cannot allocate sufficient time on proper rehearsals. As I think, such a group do not contribute to art. There is no point of begging of them. But educating them and moulding them productively is our duty as an older generation. But even in this process, the situation is tragic. All the playwrights of out preceding generation are no more now, creating a huge gap. When I saw the play Marasad by Sugathapala de Silva, I came out of the theatre with the idea of making Dhawala Bheeshana. That play gave me two actors and one female actor for my drama: Jackson Anthony, W. Jayasiri and Kaushalya Fernando. Thus, this is an interconnected procedure.

“I do not enjoy acting in cinema”

Q: The success of your first stagecraft might have contributed to your first cinematic creation, Hansa Vilak in 1980. How did the experience lead to your filmmaking process?

A: I joined cinema in 1969 with Bak Maha Deegaya by Dayananda Goonewardena. After making Eka Adhipathi I was given a chance to join Wasantha Obeysekera’s Palagetiyo as the protagonist. The experience I gathered from working in Palagetiyo encouraged me to enter cinema with a work of my own by directing Hansa Vilak.

Q: What are your latest plans in cinema? You were not present in cinema after your appearance in Satyajit Maitipe’s Bora Diya Pokuna. Are you planning to direct a new film?

A: After Bawa Duka and Bawa Karuma, cinema became a taxing experience for me. One issue is after making a film, the director has to screen the film as well. As a filmmaker from the young generation, Prasanna is striving to keep this up. Handagama also made an attempt. He ventured with an alternative cinema movement with Me Mage Sandai. But he was exhausted. Censorship and regulations affect the current cinema in a wretched manner. However, after re-staging my plays, I am looking forward to working on a film after November next year.

Q: As a director?

A: Yes. In the meantime, I am analysing several readings of Hansa Vilak. I acted in Bora Diya Pokuna considering the request of its young director. But I do not enjoy acting in cinema.

Q: Do you think the future of Sri Lankan theatre and cinema is hopeful and positive?

A: Yes I do. These political anarchies come to an end at a particular moment. It may not happen automatically. It is our duty to expedite that moment.

Q: Can that journey be made possible by artistes alone?

A: It is a collective journey. The discussion should be made possible by all of us.

Q: In this context, what is the responsibility of the administrative bodies?

A: The state should move beyond the state drama festival, and confining artistes to the exam papers. Knowledgeable figures rarely come to play the decisive roles. There is an intellectual vacuum in the relevant administrative positions. The culture-related issues and clashes we witnesses during the last few years were resulted because the respective administrative positions were held by some ignorant people. We are immune to this system now. Those who are not accustomed to this will find this situation uncomfortable. Once you are used to it, it is useless having conflicts with this.
Brecht says at the end of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (that has been adapted into Sinhala as Yakshaaweshya): “Do not rejoice in his (Hitler’s) defeat, you men. For though the world has stood up and stopped the bastard, the bitch that bore him is in heat again.” We told this to the Sri Lankan audience in 1994.

Bandaranaike reveals that the society in turmoil after the 1971 insurrection had influenced him to write the play. He goes on to say that time was equivalent to now where an election was announced.

A dire flood strikes the country ruled by the Fascist ruler, Macclum. But he remains totally ignorant of the victimized and tries to secure his power. He gives orders to cut a finger of every citizen.

A young boy, Antonio, was also imprisoned by him. Antonio was used by his brother, Walter to raise awareness of the plight of flood victims. The tyrant also poisons his army chief and confers the title to his son.

Antonio's flood-affected family members were brought before the tyrant accused of gathering in public. He lets his generals enjoy with the daughter of the family and she dies of their harassments. The family's head is also murdered there.

But Walter, with the valour of his tongue, challenges Macclum showing his own and his officers' inefficiency. The humiliated tyrant then entrusts Walter the almost-impossible tasks of stopping the flood and rehabilitating the flood-affected lives in 6 months time to save his life. Walter readily takes the challenge and with the help of nothing-to-lose people like him, does a remarkable job in four months. So, the masses gather around him.

Meanwhile, disaster strikes for the tyrant; one of his guests makes his wife pregnant. The predictions reveal the birth of the child will be the end of his rule and the revival of leftists. Since then, the tyrant and his son are fully committed to irrational blunders.

They arrest Walter and torture him. This news makes the masses to stand tall against him. Malcolm, the tyrant's son, even calls Walter's wife to sleep with him if she wants to save her husband's life. But her silence and indecision in the most poignant of moments, makes Malcolm shoot Walter and kill him. News arrives that Macclum's wife had died in childbirth.

Meanwhile, the rebels attack the castle with the help of soldiers. They insist on killing the tyrant and his son despite the protests of Walter's wife, Olga, who is all against bloodshed.

The poignancy of the moment heightens as the little Antonio suddenly appears playing a sorrowful tune with his violin. The play ends here with the bent heads of the tyrant and his son, giving vent for the audience's imagination.

There's certainly a lot to laugh about the play. It is full of subtle political sarcasm and even crude jokes at times.

But it's not a mere political satire. It is a humorous and symbolic exploration of the contemporary Sri Lankan society in the most ironic terms. In fact there is much food for thought in it.

Eka Adipathi clearly brings out the predicament of the people and religious institutions under the iron hand of totalitarian regimes, and their nothing-to-lose struggle to shake off the manacles which suffocate them. The unsurpassed strength of humanity, togetherness and forgiveness are also successfully dramatized.

Dharmasiri Bandaranaike, playing the tyrant's role himself, really does a marvellous piece of acting. He exploits facial expressions and intonation admirably and perfectly shows the anxiety, insecurity and fear hidden in the subconscious minds of every unmerited ruler. With him on the lead, the entire cast and crew also do a commendable job making the full use of the set, props, music and lightening, making him not 'Ekadipathi' of the play.

Somebody threw a potato chip to the Elphinstone theatre's fish pond when I was coming out. Even though it was too large for him, a big Gourami dashed to grab it and disappeared. But suddenly a group of small fish gathered from nowhere started giving him a chase.

They cornered him, and the next second I saw them nibbling the potato chip together. The big Gourami looked at them from a safe distance.

We grew up hearing about this play. The legend of Dharmasiri’s work as an actor and playwright have been the stories we were weaned on as children. Eka Adhipathi emerged as a milestone in the history of political theatre in Sri Lanka – all of us who have studied theatre at any level will inevitably come across some mention of this play and the stir it created when it was first produced in 1976, with a then young Dharmasiri himself playing the title role of the military dictator. He too emerged as an exceptionally talented actor and playwright to be contended with, and with Eka Adhipathi, he made his mark. He had come to stay.

I remember seeing Trojan Kanthavo some years ago. I have vivid memories of it, of the tanks and camouflage clad, gun-toting soldiers, and of course, the women – torn, bereft, strong. And yet, in my younger age, I missed quite a lot. I remember asking my mother what modern-day soldiers were doing in an ancient Greek play. My mother said ‘I guess what they are trying to say is that war is the same – no matter when or where it happens’. When I read Trojan Women now, I can only imagine the impact that Dharmasiri’s brave new production must have had on audiences at the time. So when I started to notice the posters for Eka Adhipathi, placed - strategically or incidentally I do not know - amongst the posters of a certain real-life president, I was thrilled. I would now get to see the legendary Eka Adhipathi – now that I was older, and an actor and theatre-enthusiast in my own right.

I went to the Lionel Wendt on the 3rd of December, to watch Eka Adhipathi, with high expectations. I expected an ingenious script and an extraordinary actor. I got both.

Eka Adhipathi needs to be taken in context – written in the ‘70s, and performed in a particular comic theatrical style that combines physicality and exaggeration. Yes, it was longer than most plays that my Twitter generation is used to, and yes, it was a lot of dialogue. While some part of me thinks it might be adapted to suit contemporary audiences more, another part of me believes the point is that we need to see it as it was. It’s important for my generation to view this as it were then – it’s a historical artefact, and it needs to treated and viewed as such. To edit or adapt it may mean we damage it. To edit or adapt it may mean we are taking the easy way out. Maybe it is us the audience that needs to be more patient with good art – maybe good art deserves our time and our attention. The playing style too is a historic artefact. It’s important, I consider it a part of my education, to see this performed in the style that it was then – a style that will soon probably vanish altogether. As a student of traditional dance, I struggle with this every day: is there a way to successfully merge the traditional (or old) with the modern (or new), without compromising on the artistic integrity of the work of art?

Eka Adhipathi needs to be viewed as we view Chaplin, or Laurel and Hardy. It is a leap from the realistic and naturalistic theatre we are used to in the 21st Century – it was nearly 3 hours long, with very little action and a lot of dialogue, the actors wore exaggerated make-up that consisted of lines upon lines on their foreheads and cheeks, their entire bodies shook when they laughed, with emphasis on the up-and-down movement of the shoulders, they swept across the stage rather than walked, every movement of their arms and heads were large and each word they spoke was carefully drawn out, projected, quite unlike natural speech. It was a leap from the quiet, more thoughtful plays that win our hearts today, but it was a different sort of theatre altogether.

It was Brecht’s belief that theatre should be viewed objectively and then judged, not felt. Brecht, a life-long Marxist, wished to use his theatre to create social change. He believed that if the audience were to get too emotional, they wouldn’t be able to go away and think, and to him, clear thought was better for social change than thought that was muddled up in the complexity of human emotions. He wished to emotionally alienate his audience from the characters, allowing them to think and judge rather than feel. In this way, plays like Eka Adhipathi are successful – there were moments of deliberate discomfort, but mostly the audience laughed along at characters and plot-lines that are caricatures, yes, but also sickly realistic and familiar.

Everything about Eka Adhipathi may have been from a time past, all except that which precisely matters most – its subject. Eka Adhipathi may have been old-fashioned – but it was not outdated. It was not relevant and timely in a particularly sophisticated or specific manner, but it was both relevant and timely. Maybe the things we felt were familiar – the signature characteristics of living in a dictatorship, the constant fear, the idealistic yet clear-minded hope of those that rebel, the fact that there is precious little you can do to change it and the symptoms of any oppressor, his own constant fear, his rash disregard for the dignity of the lives of others – are not so much specific to Sri Lanka or to this particular time but more universally relevant to dictatorships. But all great art is universal. Or at least I think it needs to be. And the fact that Dharmasiri chose to stage it now, after all these years, is a talent worth commending for itself – knowing when to stage a play is as important as having a good play to stage.

Dharmasiri himself, playing the dictator was extraordinary. He is a superb comic actor, with just the right physicality and timing. That calibre of good old-fashioned comic acting that runs into farce while not over-stepping the line to become ridiculous, is something that is hard to achieve. It takes a great deal of control, and the ability to know exactly where that line lies. It takes discipline, and more than anything it takes sincerity – without control, discipline and sincerity, the performance is in danger of being ‘played for laughs’ and ends up being tiresome and terrible unfunny. This happens with comedy and farce on Colombo stages all the time. A farcical character of the proportions of the Dictator is hard to achieve, and even harder to sustain. Dharmasiri owned the stage in many of his scenes, and sustained the character consistently and brilliantly for nearly 3 hours, a feat that many young actors can learn plenty from. Rajiv Ponweera, who played Walter, the leader of the group that plans to revolt against the dictator, did justice to his great character, a clear- minded, thoughtful, quiet yet powerful young man with a vision and a calm sort of sensibility to him, in a sense, the hero of the play – and this is the highest compliment that can be paid to Rajiv. He has that rare gift of being able to project without shouting, and he speaks every word onstage with precision, deliberation and sincerity – it makes his performances potent and stirring, while not being overly dramatic or heavy-handed. The four actors who played the Dictator’s four generals were also commendable – they were funny and quick and created quirky characters who were the epitome of the ‘bumbling fools’. The wonderful thing about these actors was they did not lose the sense of comic absurdity of their roles, even when they were up to absolutely no good. They did not become evil or sinister, even when they were clearly doing evil or sinister things. There remained a stark contrast between their laughing, jolly personalities and their horrific actions - and this in fact served in making them seem even more scary than if they had played the outright villains.

What can be said in way of criticism about this production of Eka Adhipathi was that it lacked a final polish. In scenes where there were several people onstage simultaneously, the tension of certain very uncomfortable scenes was sometimes broken by minute things like actors bumping into each other, bumping into furniture, actors masking other actors, or not being in character while walking offstage. This was probably partly an indication that the Director of this play was also its leading actor – Dharmasiri probably wasn’t as active in his role as Director as he might have been had he had the leisure of having only one job to do. Sometimes, it takes one person to just sit outside and constantly watch it and shout at actors. But it was also unfortunately partly an indication of a little indiscipline on the part of the actors – maybe more alertness and awareness about other actors and your space as well as theirs and constantly sustaining characters could have helped to create more tension and maintain it. Sometimes, it felt a bit like the entire thing rested on Dharmasiri’s performance and that not many of the other actors were sharing the responsibility. From what I know, many of the actors appearing onstage in this production were experienced actors – the above mentioned slip-ups can be avoided easily and would have lifted the production higher.

I felt at the end of the evening like the best thing about the production was the script. This is not necessarily a good or bad thing as far as the production is concerned. The script is a work of art – it is quick, witty, sharp and in scenes terrible and sinister in its ironic sense of humour. It is in moments larger than life and in moments incredibly subtle and nuanced. It shifts between the hilarious lines of characters such as the Dictator, and Lawrence, a fellow military dictator and friend to The Dictator - and the quiet, deliberate and moving ideas of Walter – spoken with care and certainty, and Antonio’s grandfather – a broken old man who doesn’t care for the idealism of politics, torn only by the suffering it brings upon innocent people like himself. It shifts between the loud arrogance of the Dictator, his son and minions, and the sophistication and erudition of thought in Walter and his wife Olga. It makes these shifts, which would have seemed sudden and inconsistent in the hands of a lesser writer, bravely and boldly without a moment’s hesitation and justifies it with strong and steady characters.

By virtue of being a good play, it still stands out as a great achievement. And it deserves to be seen everywhere in Sri Lanka.

The million-dollar question of who it’s about – well, that’s up to interpretation.
"The only play worthy of note this year has been Eka Adhipathi which also attempts to blend humour and politics. Like Navagaththegama and Hemasiri Liyanage, Dharmasiri Bandaranayake the producer of Eka-Adhipathi, has sought inspiration from both Karl and Groucho Marx. Special intention must be made of his own chaplinesque portrayal of the great dictator. As an actor he is certainly the find of the year."
"The best attended of the plays was Bandaranayake’s Eka-Adhipathi written, directed and acted by him. It was a dialog-chocked script which swept its paces like grease-lightning. As a production it stood with perfect facility with the players pouncing on their cues with unerring rapidity. Bandaranayake’s portrayal of the dictator was a ‘tour de force’ of timing, delineation and tonal vivacity."
"The play ‘Eka-Adhipathi’ is certain to be a refreshingly novel experience for the Sinhala theatregoer harried by the oppressive monotony of a string of ideological melodramas. It had a lively pace which gathered momentum with each successive scene and a soul stirring authenticity that exerted an almost hypnotic influence on the spectator. As the play progressed one could sense an exhilarating tension welling up within the walls of the often outraged Lumbini Theatre.

With a series of cleverly arranged vignettes Dharmasiri Bandaranayake who scripted and directed Eka-Adhipathi depicted the physical and emotional confrontation between the desperate masses and the degenerate but cockily confident administrative establishment in a hypothetical land governed by a Machiavellian military despot.

This play should provide inspiration and even education to the aspiring young dramatists. Acting was a very high standard all round with the playwright himself in the role of the President and Sunethra Sarachchandra as Olga outshining the rest of the cast.

Eka-Adhipathi though not a masterpiece came tantalizingly close to being one."
